Accentuate is a pronunciation practice app — you record yourself saying words and phrases, and we score how close you sound to a target accent. Here's what that involves on the data side, in plain terms.

The short version. We don't keep your recordings. Each one is sent to our scoring service, scored, and thrown away in the same request. We do keep your email address, your practice history, and some product analytics, all described below. We don't sell your data, we don't share it for anyone else's marketing, and we don't track you across other apps or sites.

Your recordings

When you tap record, the audio goes from your browser or the app to our scoring endpoint over an encrypted connection, gets decoded and scored in memory, and is then discarded — the app just gets the score back. We never write your audio to a database, an object store, or a backup, we don't use it to train models, and no person ever listens to it.

One technical wrinkle: some audio formats, including the M4A files iOS records, can't be streamed straight into our decoder, so they're briefly written to a temporary file on the server first. That file is deleted the moment decoding finishes — even if scoring fails — and it only ever touches short-lived container storage, never a disk that persists.

What we collect

WhatWhy
Email address, display name, and a hashed password To create and secure your account. Passwords are hashed with bcrypt using a unique random salt before storage.
Practice history — lessons completed, scores, streaks, phoneme progress To show your progress and choose your next session.
Product analytics — which screens and features you used, and when To understand whether the app works. Recorded against your account, and before you sign up against a random identifier stored in your browser.
Your browser or device type (the user-agent string) Attached to analytics and error reports, so we can tell a Safari-only bug from a real one.
Error reports — what went wrong, plus a short trail of the actions leading up to it To fix crashes and microphone failures we could not otherwise reproduce.
Your time zone So the daily practice allowance resets at midnight where you are, not in UTC.
Messages you send us, and the email address you give for a reply To answer you.
Reports that a reference clip sounds wrong To find and regenerate bad audio. These are about our clips, not your recordings.
Notification endpoints, if you turn on reminders To send the reminder. Turning reminders off removes it.
Subscription state and a customer identifier from our payment processor To know whether you have an active subscription. See Payments.

What we do not collect

Cookies and local storage

We use no advertising or tracking cookies. What we do use:

Payments

Subscriptions bought on the web are processed by Stripe. Card details are entered with Stripe and never touch our servers; we receive only a customer identifier and the subscription's status. Stripe's handling of your data is governed by Stripe's privacy policy.

Subscriptions bought through the App Store are processed by Apple, under Apple's own terms. We receive a subscription identifier and its status, and no payment details at all.

Subscriptions bought through Google Play are processed by Google, under Google Play's own terms. We receive a purchase token, an obfuscated account identifier we generate, the subscription's status and expiry, and no payment details.

Who else processes your data

Running the app means relying on a handful of outside services. Here's who they are and what each one actually sees — none of them get more than they need to do their one job:

ProviderWhat it doesWhat it sees
Modal Hosting and the scoring service App requests, including recordings while a scoring request is processed
Neon Database Everything in the "What we collect" table
Cloudflare DNS and content delivery Request metadata, in its own short-term logs
Stripe Web payments Your email address and payment details
Resend Transactional email, including password resets, receipts, and enabled reminders Your email address and the message
ElevenLabs Generates the reference clips you listen to Nothing about you. Clips are generated ahead of time from our word lists.
Anthropic Writes the pronunciation tips shown on cards Nothing about you. Tips are generated ahead of time per word, not per user.

How long we keep things

Your account and practice history are kept for as long as your account exists. Analytics and error reports are kept while they are still useful for understanding how the app is used and for fixing bugs.

You can delete your account from inside the app. Open Profile, then Account settings, then Delete account — in the iPhone or Android app, or on the web at app.accentuatevoices.com, so you never need to reinstall anything to do it. Doing so removes your account and the practice data attached to it. If you would rather we did it for you, write to the address below. Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription; cancel that with Apple or Google first. See deleting your account.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it, and you can unsubscribe from reminder emails at any time using the link in them. If you're in the UK, the EU, or a US state with its own privacy law, that law may give you additional rights on top — but we give every Accentuate user the same options regardless of where they're writing in from.

Ask by emailing support@accentuatevoices.com. We will reply within 30 days.

Children

Accentuate is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has created an account, write to us and we will remove it.

Where your data is held

Our providers operate in the United States, so your data is processed there. If you are in the UK or the EU, that is a transfer outside your jurisdiction, made under the standard contractual protections these providers offer.

Changes to this policy

We update this policy when our data practices change. The date at the top shows the latest revision. We will also call out material changes in the app.
